Laser Gum Re-Contouring

Lasers are currently being used for re-contouring or reshaping gums to remove diseased tissue, or extra tissue as in the case of a gummy smile. Gummy smiles are easily corrected and the gum line can be cosmetically reshaped by our laser dentist.

Laser Gum Re-Contouring

Much attention is given to keeping teeth healthy, but did you know healthy gums are also important to good oral health? The gums are soft tissue covering the tooth roots and the bone to which the teeth are connected. Healthy gums and teeth are the foundation of a beautiful smile.

The smile line – teeth that show when you smile – gets its appearance from several factors:

  • Lip shape and size
  • Lip movement when smiling
  • Teeth shape and size
  • Facial muscle development
  • Gum tissue development

Changing your gum line can have a tremendous impact on your smile, and unlike conventional surgery, laser dentistry procedures involve minimum bleeding and heal very quickly. This treatment involves re-contouring and shaping the gum tissue that surrounds one or more teeth. It may be performed for functional or cosmetic reasons. In some instances, laser gum re-contouring alone cannot correct your smile.  In these cases your dentist will refer you to a periodontist for esthetic bone reshaping as well as gingival re-contouring.
